How to Prep for Your First Lash Appointment: A Complete First-Timer’s Guide

Booking your first set of eyelash extensions is exciting — fluttery, weightless lashes that you can wake up to every morning are just an appointment away. But here’s something most first-timers don’t realise: how well your lashes turn out (and how long they last) starts long before you ever lie down on the treatment bed.
At Posh Deluxe Salon in Mount Pleasant, we see clients every week who say the same thing: “I wish I’d known what to do before I came in.” The truth is, lash retention isn’t just about your artist’s skill or the products we use — it’s about how clean, oil-free, and ready your natural lashes are when you arrive.
So if you’re booked in for a Classic, Hybrid, Volume, or Mega Volume set, this is your complete prep guide. Follow these steps and you’ll walk in calm, prepared, and ready for the best possible result.
Why Prepping for Your Lash Appointment Actually Matters
Eyelash extensions are bonded to your natural lashes using a medical-grade adhesive that needs three things to cure properly: clean lashes, the right humidity, and zero oil interference. If even a tiny film of mascara, moisturiser, or natural skin oil is left on your lashes when the adhesive is applied, the bond weakens — which means premature shedding, poor retention, and lashes that just don’t last.
Good prep doesn’t just protect your investment. It also makes your appointment more comfortable, faster, and gives your artist a clean canvas to work with. Think of it as setting yourself up for success.
1 Week Before: Set the Foundation
If you’ve got the time to plan ahead, the week before your appointment is when the real prep begins. Here’s what to do:
Stop using waterproof mascara
Waterproof formulas are notoriously hard to remove and tend to leave a stubborn residue along the lash line. Switch to a regular, water-based mascara — or skip mascara altogether for the last few days. This gives your lashes time to fully release any lingering product.
Avoid lash growth serums with prostaglandins
Serums containing prostaglandin analogues (like the active ingredient in some popular lash growth products) can affect your lash cycle and even cause irritation when extensions are applied. Stop using them at least 3–5 days before your appointment — earlier if you can.
Pause oil-based skincare around your eyes
Cleansing balms, oil-based makeup removers, rich eye creams, and facial oils all leave residue that interferes with adhesive bonding. Switch to oil-free alternatives in the days leading up to your appointment.
Skip the lash tint or perm
If you’ve had a lash lift or perm recently, you’ll need to wait at least 6–8 weeks before getting extensions — the chemistry of the two services doesn’t mix well. For more on this, see our guide to Keratin Lash Lifts.
Hydrate, sleep, and eat well
This sounds basic, but a well-rested body produces better lash growth and less puffy eyes. If you’re flying in red-eyed from a late night, the swelling and watering can make application harder — especially around the inner corners. Be kind to yourself the week before.
24–48 Hours Before: The Cleansing Phase
This is where you really start dialling in. In the day or two leading up to your appointment:
- Wash your lashes gently with a lash-safe foaming cleanser every morning and night. If you don’t have one yet, a fragrance-free, oil-free micellar water works in a pinch.
- Avoid heavy eye makeup — no eyeliner along the waterline, no smoky shadow, no false strip lashes.
- Skip the heavy moisturisers and serums around your eye area.
- If you wear contact lenses, plan to wear glasses to the appointment (more on this below).
- Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol the night before — both affect how puffy your eyes are in the morning.
If your lashes feel even slightly waxy or coated when you run a clean cotton tip across them, give them another wash. Clean is the goal.
The Morning of Your Appointment
This is the most important window. What you do (and don’t do) on the morning of your lash appointment can make or break your retention.
Do this:
- Wash your face and lashes with a gentle, oil-free cleanser. Use a soft brush or your fingertips to work through every lash from root to tip.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water and pat your eye area dry with a clean towel.
- Brush your lashes with a clean spoolie to make sure they’re separated and dry.
- Eat something — appointments can run 1.5 to 3 hours and you don’t want a rumbling stomach mid-application.
- Use the bathroom right before you lie down. Once you’re on the bed with eye patches on, you won’t want to interrupt the flow.
Don’t do this:
- No mascara, no eyeliner, no eye shadow — not even “a little bit.”
- No moisturiser, sunscreen, or makeup primer around the eyes.
- No caffeine if you’re prone to eye twitching (a small flutter can throw off precise application).
- No contact lenses — wear your glasses or bring your case and solution.
- No heavy false-lash residue — if you’ve worn strip lashes in the last 24 hours, make sure all glue is fully removed.
What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home)
Most lash studios — Posh Deluxe included — provide everything you need for a comfortable appointment, including blankets, pillows, and aftercare products. But there are a few personal items worth packing in your bag:
Bring with you:
- Your glasses (if you usually wear contacts) and a contact lens case with solution.
- Your phone, on silent, with headphones if you’d like to listen to a podcast or music.
- A hair tie — long hair off your face makes the process easier.
- A light jumper or cardigan if you tend to get cold. Treatment rooms are often kept cooler for the artist’s comfort.
- A list of any questions or photos of inspiration looks you love.
Leave at home:
- Heavy facial makeup — you’ll be lying down for hours and it just gets in the way.
- Strong perfume or scented lotions. Treatment rooms are intimate spaces and your artist will be working close to your face.
- Stress. Seriously. Lash appointments are a chance to switch off — many of our clients fall asleep.
What to Communicate to Your Lash Artist
Your consultation is the most important part of your appointment, especially for first-timers. The more your artist knows, the better the outcome. Be open about:
- Your lifestyle. Do you swim, exercise, travel, or work outdoors? This shapes the curl, length, and density we recommend.
- Your skincare routine. Mention any retinoids, acids, or oil-based products you use — they affect adhesive longevity.
- Any allergies or sensitivities. Hay fever, sensitive skin, latex allergies, or past reactions to adhesives — tell us.
- Medications and recent procedures. Botox, chemotherapy, eye surgeries, and certain medications can affect your eligibility or comfort.
- The look you want. “Natural,” “wispy,” “glam,” “eyeliner effect,” “doll eye” — bring photos to be precise.
- How much maintenance you’re willing to do. A heavy Volume set looks incredible but needs more careful aftercare than a Classic set.
If you’re not sure what style you want, that’s completely fine — our team is trained to assess your eye shape, lash health, and lifestyle to recommend the best match. For more on this, see our post on why eye shape and lash extensions must work together.
During Your Appointment: How to Be the Perfect Client
Once you’re on the bed and your eye patches are placed, your only job is to relax. But a few small things make a big difference for your artist (and for your final result):
- Stay still. Tiny movements of your head or eyes can affect placement. If you need to shift or sneeze, just say so — your artist will pause.
- Keep your eyes gently closed. Don’t squeeze, don’t peek. Your eyes should feel soft and natural, like you’re falling asleep.
- Breathe through your nose. It keeps your face still and stops watering eyes.
- Speak up if anything feels uncomfortable. A patch pressing too hard, a tweezer too close, mild stinging — your artist would rather know early than have you tough it out.
- Try not to chat too much. We love a good catch-up, but constant talking moves your facial muscles. A short conversation at the start and end is perfect — sleeping or quietly relaxing in between is even better.
The First 24 Hours After Your Appointment
Your prep doesn’t quite end when you walk out of the salon. The first 24 hours are critical for the adhesive to fully cure — even if we use a Superbonder treatment to speed this up.
- Keep your lashes dry for the first 4–6 hours (or as advised by your artist). At Posh Deluxe, our curing process means most clients can return to normal activities quickly — but it’s still smart to avoid steam, saunas, and hot showers on day one.
- Don’t touch, rub, or pick at your lashes. The temptation is real, but every touch transfers oil from your fingers.
- Sleep on your back if you can. Side and stomach sleepers squash their lashes against the pillow, which causes them to twist or come loose.
- Avoid oil-based cleansers, makeup removers, and creams — for the lifetime of your extensions, not just day one.
- Book your first infill for 2–3 weeks out. Don’t wait until your set has shed dramatically — regular infills are how you keep your lashes looking full.

First Lash Appointment FAQ
Expect anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the style you’ve chosen. Classic sets are usually quicker; Volume and Mega Volume sets take longer because each fan is hand-made. We’d rather take our time and give you a beautiful, comfortable result than rush.
Not at all. The most common feedback we get is that it’s so relaxing, people fall asleep. You may feel gentle tugging or the cool sensation of the under-eye patches, but there should be no pain. If anything stings or feels uncomfortable, tell your artist immediately.
Yes — these are all normal human things and your artist has seen them all. Just give a heads-up so they can pause and move their tweezers safely away. Watery eyes are common in the first 10–15 minutes as your eyes adjust to having them closed.
Let us know in advance and we’ll do a patch test or recommend a sensitive adhesive. We’ve worked with clients who have hay fever, dry eye, and contact lens sensitivities — there’s almost always a way to make extensions work for you, safely.
Run a clean cotton tip along the base of your lashes. If it comes away with any residue, oil sheen, or makeup, give them another gentle wash. When they’re truly clean, the cotton tip will look the same as it did when you started.
Foundation and lip products are fine, but please come with completely clean eyes — no mascara, no eyeliner, no eye shadow, no concealer around the eye area. Even tinted moisturisers can interfere with adhesive bonding.
