Before we get into styles, let’s identify your eye shape. Stand in front of a mirror in good lighting, look straight ahead, and check each of these.
Almond eyes — the “classic” eye shape. Slightly tapered at the outer corner, symmetrical top and bottom, iris fully visible with a small amount of white showing above and below.
Round eyes — visible whites above AND below the iris even when your eye is relaxed. Eyes appear more circular.
Hooded eyes — the crease of your eyelid is partially hidden by a fold of skin above it when your eyes are open. This is extremely common, especially in mature clients.
Monolid eyes — no visible crease in the eyelid. The lid appears smooth and flat from lash line to brow. Common in East Asian, Southeast Asian, and some Central Asian ethnicities.
Upturned eyes — the outer corners of your eyes sit slightly higher than the inner corners. Naturally “lifted” appearance.
Downturned eyes — the outer corners of your eyes sit slightly lower than the inner corners. Can give a softer, more romantic look but sometimes reads as “tired” if not styled well.
Close-set eyes — the distance between your two eyes is less than the width of one of your eyes.
Wide-set eyes — the distance between your two eyes is more than the width of one of your eyes.

Almond eyes are the easiest to work with because they suit almost every lash style. Classic sets, Volume sets, wispy Kim K styles, cat-eye mapping, doll-eye mapping — all beautiful on almond eyes.
For a classic soft glam look on almond eyes, we map longest through the middle third of the lash line, tapering shorter at both the inner and outer corners.
For a cat-eye look, we map longer toward the outer third of the lash line, tapering shorter at the inner corner.
For a doll-eye look, we map longest through the very centre of the lash line, tapering shorter at both corners — the opposite of the cat-eye.
What to avoid:
Nothing is off-limits for almond eyes. But if your lashes are also short, avoid overly heavy Mega Volume — the weight can drag naturally lifted almond eyes down.
Round Eyes: Elongating Is Everything
What flatters:
Round eyes benefit hugely from a cat-eye mapping style — longest through the outer third of the lash line, tapering shorter toward the inner corner. This visually elongates the eye and shifts it away from the “circular” appearance.
Wispy Kim K styles with feathered outer corners also work beautifully because they add horizontal length to the eye.
Curl choice matters: medium curls (C or CC) create beautiful lift without exaggerating roundness. Avoid dramatic upward L or L+ curls, which can accentuate the round shape.
What to avoid:
Doll-eye mapping (longest through the centre) is the enemy of round eyes — it emphasises the circular shape and makes the eyes look wider and more surprised. Also avoid uniform lengths across the whole lash line, which reads as “round on round.”

What flatters:
Strong upward curls (D, DD, or L curls) are essential. Hooded eyes need the extension to point upward past the lid fold, otherwise the extension just disappears into the hood.
Longer lengths through the outer third (cat-eye mapping) also work beautifully — they create length that visually competes with the hood and shifts attention outward.
Wispy styles with lifted spikes also flatter hooded eyes because the varied lengths draw the eye upward across the lash line.
What to avoid:
Medium C curls are almost always the wrong call for hooded eyes — the curl isn’t dramatic enough to lift the extension above the hood. Also avoid doll-eye mapping on hooded eyes, which tucks all the length into the middle where the hood covers it. And avoid overly long lengths (14mm+) which can drag the outer corners down.
Monolid Eyes: Bold Curls Change Everything
What flatters:
Monolid eyes need dramatic curl to create the illusion of a lash line. L curls or L+ curls are specifically designed for monolids — they sit flat at the base and then curl sharply upward, giving definition where the natural lash line is flat.
Wispy Kim K mapping flatters monolids beautifully because the varied lengths add dimension.
Longer through the outer third helps elongate monolid eyes, which are often naturally elongated but benefit from further emphasis.
What to avoid:
Medium C or CC curls disappear into the flat lid on monolid eyes — the whole lash set can look invisible from the front. Also avoid uniform Classic mapping without wispy variation, which can look dense but undefined.
Upturned Eyes: Balance the Lift
What flatters:
Upturned eyes are already naturally lifted, so mapping should balance rather than exaggerate that lift.

Doll-eye mapping (longest through the centre) works beautifully for wide-set eyes — it brings visual weight toward the centre of the face and balances the wider spacing.
Fuller inner-corner emphasis balances wide-set eyes by drawing attention inward.
What to avoid:
Cat-eye mapping exaggerates the wide-set appearance by drawing eyes further apart. Also avoid heavy outer-corner emphasis of any kind.

Classic / Natural mapping — even distribution of length across the lash line. Suits almond and upturned eyes best.
Cat-eye / Fox-eye mapping — longest through the outer third. Suits round, downturned, close-set, and hooded eyes.
Doll-eye / Baby-eye mapping — longest through the middle. Suits upturned, wide-set, and heart-face shapes.
Wispy / Kim K mapping — varied “spike and rest” pattern with lifted spikes throughout. Suits monolid, hooded, and downturned eyes especially well.
What NOT to Ask For (Common Mistakes)
Some requests we hear repeatedly that almost always end badly:
“Make them as long as possible.”
Length limits are set by your natural lashes, not your preference. Extensions longer than 40% beyond your natural lash length weigh your lashes down, cause premature shedding, and often look artificial. A great artist will map your ideal maximum.
“Give me the exact set from this Instagram photo.”
Unless you and the person in the photo have identical eye shape, face shape, and natural lash length, the set that looks stunning on her won’t necessarily flatter you. Bring inspiration photos to guide the aesthetic, not to copy exactly.
“Just do a really thick cat-eye.”
A cat-eye is beautiful on the right eye shape and can be aggressive on the wrong one. If you have naturally upturned eyes, a heavy cat-eye can look severe.
“I want them to look really full.”
“Full” without context can mean anything from beautiful Volume mapping to overpacked Mega Volume that damages your natural lashes. Better to describe the effect (“polished, dramatic, natural, doll-like”) than to describe the density.
“Same as last time.”
Even if you loved your last set, your natural lashes shift over time, your face changes with age, and your artist may see something better this time. Stay open to small refinements.
Considerations Beyond Eye Shape

Face shape.
Round faces benefit from lifted, elongating lash styles. Oval faces suit almost anything. Heart-shaped faces suit doll-eye mapping to balance the wider forehead. Square faces suit softer wispy styles rather than dramatic sharp mapping.
Natural lash length.
If your natural lashes are short (under 6mm), you’ll get the best result with lighter, shorter extensions rather than pushing for maximum length. Long natural lashes can support more dramatic extensions.
Glasses.
If you wear glasses regularly, avoid extensions that hit the lens. Your artist can shorten the length through the middle third (where lashes most often meet glasses) to prevent the frustration of your lashes brushing against the frames.
Lifestyle.
Active lifestyles (swimmers, gym-goers, mums) generally suit lighter Classic or hybrid sets that need less maintenance. If you’re chasing dramatic looks for events, you can go heavier for those occasions and lighter between.
Age.
Mature eyes often benefit from lighter sets that lift rather than weigh down. Heavy Mega Volume on mature lashes can drag the eyes downward and emphasise droopiness. This is why we often recommend hybrid or lighter Volume sets for clients over 50.
