How to Prepare for Your Cosmetic Tattoo Appointment: A Complete Pre-Care Guide for Ombre Brows, Lip Blush, and Eyeliner Tattoo

Booking a cosmetic tattoo appointment — whether it’s ombre brows, lip blush, or eyeliner tattoo — is an investment in yourself that pays you back every single morning. No more pencilling in brows. No more lipstick reapplications. No more shaky-handed eyeliner days. Just you, softly enhanced, ready to go.

But here’s something most clients don’t realise until afterwards: how well your cosmetic tattoo heals (and how long it lasts) starts well before you sit down in our chair. The week leading up to your appointment is where the real preparation happens — and getting it right can be the difference between a result you adore and one that’s harder to perfect.

At Posh Deluxe Salon in Mount Pleasant, our PMU artists guide every client through pre-care during their consultation. But it helps to have it all written down to come back to — especially because the most important steps start days before your appointment, not on the morning of.

So if you’re booked in for ombre brows, lip blush, eyeliner tattoo, or combination brows, this is your complete pre-care guide. Follow these steps and you’ll walk in calm, prepared, and ready for the best possible result your skin can hold.

Why Pre-Care for Cosmetic Tattoo Actually Matters

Cosmetic tattooing implants pigment into the upper layers of your skin using a digital machine or specialised hand tool. For the pigment to deposit cleanly, stay vibrant, and heal evenly, your skin needs to be in the best possible condition on the day.

Three things make the biggest difference to your result:

  • How calm your skin is — calm skin holds pigment better than inflamed or irritated skin
  • How thin your blood is — thin blood means more bleeding during the procedure, and more bleeding means the pigment doesn’t deposit as cleanly
  • How prepared your specific area is — chapped lips, fresh brow waxing, or recent eyelash perms all create complications

Good pre-care doesn’t just protect your investment. It makes your appointment more comfortable, shortens the healing process, and gives your PMU artist the best possible canvas to work with. It also means you’re far less likely to need significant adjustments at your 6-week perfecting session.

1 Week Before: Set the Foundation

This is when the real prep begins. Most of these adjustments are about giving your body time to settle into the right state for cosmetic tattooing.

Stop blood-thinning medications (only after consulting your doctor)

This includes aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil supplements, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and herbal blood thinners. Reduced bleeding during your appointment means cleaner pigment deposition and a better long-term result.

Important: Never stop a prescription blood thinner without checking with your GP first. If you can’t safely pause your medication, let your PMU artist know — we’ll adjust our approach accordingly. Honesty matters more than perfection here.

Stop using retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C on the treatment area

These actives speed up skin cell turnover, which is the opposite of what we want before cosmetic tattooing. Pause them on the brow area, lip area, or eye area at least 7 days before your appointment. You can keep using them elsewhere on your face.

No facials, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion

If you’ve got a facial or chemical peel booked, push it out to at least 2 weeks after your cosmetic tattoo perfecting session. Treatments like these strip the upper layers of your skin — exactly the layers we’re about to work in.

No new skincare products or trial sizes

This week is not the time to try a new cleanser, serum, or eye cream. If your skin has an unexpected reaction to a new product, it can delay or complicate your appointment. Stick to what you know works.

No fresh tans (spray or sun)

A fresh spray tan or sun-darkened skin can throw off our colour matching. We choose your pigment based on your natural undertone — and that needs to be visible. Time your last tan at least 5 to 7 days before your appointment.

Avoid alcohol the day before

Alcohol thins your blood, dehydrates your skin, and can cause more swelling during the procedure. A glass of wine three days before is fine — but try to skip drinking the day before your appointment, especially heavily.

Drink more water

Hydrated skin holds pigment better than dehydrated skin. Aim for 8+ glasses of water per day in the week leading up to your appointment. You’ll notice the difference.

Service-Specific Prep

Depending on which cosmetic tattoo you’re booked for, there are a few extra steps that matter.

If you’re getting ombre brows or combination brows:

  • Don’t wax, thread, or tweeze your brows for 7 days before your appointment. We need your natural brow hair growth pattern visible so we can map your shape accurately. Even pluck-strays — leave them. We’ll tidy everything during your appointment.
  • No brow tinting or henna brows in the 2 weeks leading up. Tinted brow hairs can mask the colour we’re trying to match against your natural pigment.
  • No brow lamination for at least 4 weeks before. Laminated brows sit in a way that distorts the natural brow shape — your PMU artist needs to see how your hair actually grows.
  • If you have existing PMU from another artist or microblading, send us a photo when you book. We need to assess what’s already in your skin so we can plan the best refresh approach.
  • For more on what to expect after, our Complete Ombre Brows Healing Timeline walks you through it.

If you’re getting lip blush:

  • Exfoliate your lips gently every day for the week before — use a soft toothbrush in circles or a gentle sugar scrub. We want smooth, healthy lip skin on the day, not flaky or chapped lips.
  • Apply a hydrating lip balm 5 to 10 times per day. Hydrated lips heal better and hold pigment more evenly.
  • No lip filler for at least 4 weeks before your appointment. Filler changes the shape of your lips, which means the pigment placement plan will shift afterwards. If you have regular filler, do your lip blush first, then schedule filler 4 to 6 weeks later.
  • If you’re prone to cold sores, please tell us when you book. The cosmetic tattoo process can trigger a cold sore outbreak in clients who are prone — and outbreaks during healing affect pigment retention. We’ll arrange antiviral medication (Famvir or Valtrex) with your GP a few days before your appointment to dramatically reduce the risk.
  • No lip plumping products (like those with peppermint or capsicum) for 7 days before — they irritate the lip area and increase swelling.

If you’re getting eyeliner tattoo:

  • Stop using lash extensions or lash growth serums at least 2 weeks before. Both interfere with the precise placement we need around the lash line. Extensions need to be removed beforehand, and serums (especially prostaglandin-based ones) can cause sensitivity.
  • Pause lash lifts or perms for at least 4 weeks before your appointment. The chemistry doesn’t combine well, and a recent lift can mean your eyelid sits differently.
  • If you wear contact lenses, plan to wear your glasses on the day. Contacts can’t be worn during the procedure and the area will be too sensitive immediately after.
  • No eye makeup tattooing alongside other facial cosmetic procedures within 2 weeks (botox, fillers around the eye, brow lifts). The eyelid is delicate — let it heal one thing at a time.
  • For aftercare, our Complete Eyeliner Tattoo Care Instructions covers everything you need to know post-treatment.

24–48 Hours Before: Final Reset

The last day or two before your appointment is about calming everything down.

  • Get a good night’s sleep. Tired, puffy eyes make eyeliner tattoo harder and brow mapping less accurate. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of solid sleep.
  • Skip caffeine on the morning of (or limit yourself to one coffee). Caffeine can cause mild eye twitching, which throws off precision work. If you’re a heavy coffee drinker, don’t quit cold turkey — just dial back.
  • Avoid alcohol for the full 24 hours before. Alcohol thins your blood and increases swelling. Stay sober the night before.
  • No high-intensity workouts the day before. Your body needs to be calm — gentle yoga or walking is fine, but skip heavy lifting and HIIT.
  • No saltwater or chlorinated pools. Both dry out your skin and the lip area.
  • Drink water consistently. Hydration genuinely matters for pigment retention.
  • Don’t use any new products on the treatment area. Stick to your tried-and-tested routine.

The Morning of Your Appointment

This is the most important window. What you do (and don’t do) on the morning of your cosmetic tattoo appointment can shape both your comfort and your result.

Do this:

  • Wash your face gently with your normal cleanser. Avoid anything exfoliating.
  • Apply a light moisturiser only — no oils, no rich creams, no serums on the treatment area.
  • Eat a solid meal within 2 hours of your appointment. Cosmetic tattoo appointments can run 1.5 to 3 hours, and you don’t want a low blood sugar moment mid-procedure.
  • Take paracetamol if you’re sensitive to discomfort — but never ibuprofen or aspirin (which thin the blood). Paracetamol is safe.
  • Bring inspiration photos. Save 3 to 5 images on your phone of brows, lips, or eyeliner looks you love. Bring close-up photos of yourself too, so we can see what works with your features.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. You’ll be lying down for 1.5 to 3 hours. Soft, loose layers, with hair tied back. A jumper if you tend to get cold — treatment rooms are kept slightly cooler.
  • Bring your phone, charged, with headphones if you’d like to listen to a podcast or music. Many clients fall asleep — others enjoy a long quiet listen.
  • Use the bathroom right before you lie down. Once you’re set up with sterile drapes, you won’t want to interrupt the flow.

Don’t do this:

  • No makeup on the treatment area. No brow pencil, no lipstick, no eyeliner, no concealer. For lip blush, even tinted lip balm — leave it off.
  • No moisturiser, sunscreen, or primer on the brow, lip, or eye area.
  • No contact lenses for eyeliner tattoo. Wear glasses and bring your contact case + solution.
  • No false lashes or fresh strip-lash glue residue if you’re getting eyeliner tattoo.
  • No tanning, spray tanning, or self-tanner on the face in the 48 hours before.
  • No heavy perfume. Treatment rooms are intimate, and your artist will be working very close to your face.

What to Communicate to Your PMU Artist

Your consultation is the most important conversation of the entire process. The more we know about you, the better the result. Be open about:

  1. Your lifestyle. Do you spend a lot of time in the sun? Swim regularly? Use retinol nightly? All of these affect the pigment recommendation and your healing plan.
  2. Your skincare routine. Mention any actives (retinol, glycolic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide) and any oil-based skincare. They affect both pigment placement and longevity.
  3. Any allergies or sensitivities. Nickel allergies, latex allergies, fragrance sensitivities, hay fever, or past reactions to numbing creams — we need to know.
  4. Medications and supplements. Blood thinners, steroids, hormone treatments, antidepressants, fish oil, and herbal supplements all matter. So do any current antibiotics or recent surgeries.
  5. Medical conditions. Autoimmune conditions, diabetes, thyroid conditions, eczema, psoriasis, keloid scarring history, and any chronic skin conditions all factor into our plan.
  6. Past cosmetic tattoo work. Even faded or barely visible previous PMU affects what we can do today. Send photos in advance if possible.
  7. The look you want. Bring inspiration photos. Describe what you want in your own words. Tell us what you absolutely don’t want — that’s just as helpful.
  8. Your concerns. Worried about pain? Nervous about the colour? Confused about healing? Tell us. We’ve heard every concern, and we’ll talk you through each one calmly.

If you’re undecided about which treatment is right for you — for example, you’re not sure whether ombre brows or microblading suits your skin — book a free consultation first. We’d rather talk through your options properly than have you choose something that doesn’t suit your skin or lifestyle. For a deeper look at the differences, our Microblading vs Ombre Brows guide is a great starting point.

Who Should Not Get Cosmetic Tattoo (or Should Wait)

Honesty matters more than appointments. Cosmetic tattooing isn’t safe or appropriate for everyone. Please reschedule (or talk to us before booking) if any of the following apply:

  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Standard industry guidelines recommend waiting until after weaning. We’ll be happy to welcome you when you’re ready.
  • You’re currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiation. Wait until your doctor clears you, typically 6 months after treatment ends.
  • You take prescription blood thinners (warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto) — we can’t safely proceed without a GP clearance.
  • You have active eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, or rosacea flare-ups in the treatment area. Wait until the flare has fully calmed.
  • You have a history of keloid scarring. PMU can trigger keloid formation in prone individuals. We’ll discuss your options at consultation.
  • You’ve had Botox, fillers, or other cosmetic injectables in the treatment area in the past 4 weeks. Wait until the area has settled.
  • You’re prone to cold sores and haven’t taken antiviral pre-treatment (for lip blush specifically). Talk to us before booking so we can plan the antiviral with you.
  • You have an active skin infection, recent sunburn, or peeling skin on the area.
  • You’re under 18. Cosmetic tattoo is for adults only.

We will always tell you honestly if a treatment isn’t right for you — even if it means losing a booking. Your safety and result matter more than our calendar.

During Your Appointment: How to Be the Perfect Client

Once you’re settled in the chair, your only real job is to relax. But a few small habits make a big difference for your artist (and for your result):

  • Stay still. Tiny movements of your head or face affect placement. If you need to shift, sneeze, or wipe an eye, just say so — we’ll pause.
  • Breathe slowly through your nose. Keeps your face still and reduces watering eyes (especially important for eyeliner tattoo).
  • Speak up early if anything is uncomfortable. Numbing wearing off, a sharp edge, mild stinging — we’d rather know in the first 30 seconds than have you tough it out.
  • Try not to chat constantly. A great catch-up at the start and end is wonderful — but constant talking moves your facial muscles, especially around the brows and lips. Quiet, calm relaxation in between gives us our best work.
  • Trust the bold initial colour. When you see the first part of your treatment in the hand mirror, it will look bold. That’s the deliberate plan — it always fades by 30 to 50% during healing. Don’t ask us to lighten it on the spot. Trust the process.

What to Expect Immediately After (And the Next 24 Hours)

Your pre-care doesn’t quite finish when you walk out — the first 24 hours flow directly from your appointment.

  • Avoid touching the treated area with your hands. Use a clean tissue if you need to gently dab any lymph or balm.
  • Apply your aftercare product exactly as instructed. Less is more — thin layers, multiple times per day.
  • No alcohol for 48 hours. Same reason as before: thins your blood, slows healing.
  • No gym, sauna, or steam for 7 to 10 days (varies by service). Sweat and steam disrupt pigment settling.
  • No swimming for 14 days. Chlorinated pools and saltwater are pigment killers.
  • Sleep on your back if possible. Avoid pressing the treated area into a pillow.
  • Drink lots of water. Hydration helps your skin heal beautifully.

Cosmetic Tattoo Pre-Care FAQ

How long does a cosmetic tattoo appointment take?

Most cosmetic tattoo appointments at Posh Deluxe run between 1.5 and 3 hours. Ombre brows and combination brows typically take 2 to 3 hours, lip blush takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and eyeliner tattoo takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Your perfecting session at 6 to 8 weeks is usually about half that time. We never rush — and we plan plenty of consultation time at the start so you feel comfortable.

Can I take painkillers before my cosmetic tattoo appointment?

Yes — but only paracetamol (Panadol). Avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, and other NSAIDs for 48 hours before, as they thin the blood and increase bleeding during the procedure. Numbing cream is applied throughout your appointment, and most clients find the experience much more comfortable than they expected.

Do I need to take time off work?

For ombre brows: most clients return to work the next day, though your brows will look bold for 3 to 5 days. Lip blush: most clients take 1 to 2 days to avoid heavy talking and eating in public. Eyeliner tattoo: 1 to 2 days off to manage mild swelling, especially if you work in a customer-facing role. Plan around your healing if you can — and avoid booking your treatment right before an important event or photo.

What should I eat or drink before my appointment?

Eat a solid meal within 2 hours of arriving — appointments are long and you don’t want low blood sugar mid-procedure. Avoid heavy salt, caffeine (or limit to one coffee), and definitely avoid alcohol the night before. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?

You’re welcome to bring a friend or family member to your consultation — they can sit in for support and offer a second opinion on shape and colour. During the actual procedure, however, we ask that companions wait in our lounge area to keep the treatment room calm and sterile.

What if I’m scared of needles or have a low pain tolerance?

You’re not alone — most cosmetic tattoo clients are at least a little nervous. Numbing cream is applied before and during the procedure, and most clients describe the sensation as a strong tapping or vibration rather than sharp pain. If you’re particularly nervous, take paracetamol an hour before, listen to music or a podcast during the appointment, and trust that we’ll go slowly. Many clients are surprised by how relaxing the experience actually is.

Can I get cosmetic tattoo if I have sensitive skin?

Yes, almost always — with the right preparation. We always offer a patch test for sensitive clients, and we’ll select a sensitive-formula numbing cream and gentle pigments. Tell us about your skin sensitivities at the consultation so we can plan around them.

How do I know I’m ready to book my appointment?

You’re ready when: you’ve researched the treatment, you’ve seen healed (not freshly-done) work from your chosen artist, you’ve spoken to them about your goals, your skin is calm, and you’re committed to the full healing process including the perfecting session. If you’re still unsure — book a free in-salon consultation first. Most clients book their actual treatment after their consultation, but there’s never any pressure to.

What if I get sick before my appointment?

Please let us know as soon as possible. We’ll reschedule your appointment at no charge. We don’t want you to come in unwell — and your immune system needs to be strong for clean healing.

Can I do my pre-care wrong and still have a great result?

Honestly — yes, sometimes. Skilled PMU artists can work around minor pre-care slip-ups. But the better your pre-care, the cleaner your result, the easier your healing, and the less your perfecting session needs to correct. It’s always worth following the guide as closely as you can.
