Eyeliner Tattoo Aftercare & Healing: The Complete Perth Day-by-Day Guide (What to Expect for the Full 6 Weeks)

There’s a specific little moment we’ve come to recognise at Posh Deluxe.

A brand-new eyeliner tattoo client sits up after her session. She’s just seen the finished result in the mirror — sharp, defined, exactly what she asked for. And she does a small pause, tilts her head, and quietly says something like “it looks amazing right now — but what is it going to look like tomorrow? And next week? And in two weeks when the flaking starts and I panic?”

That anxiety about the healing week is universal. Eyeliner tattoo is one of the most rewarding PMU treatments in Perth — the effect of waking up with defined, mascara-effect eyes every day is genuinely life-changing — but it’s also the PMU treatment clients feel the most nervous about during healing. Sensitive area, unfamiliar sensations, and the internet full of horror stories that mostly aren’t real.

This is our complete day-by-day guide to eyeliner tattoo aftercare and healing at Posh Deluxe. What actually happens each day, what’s normal and what isn’t, exactly what to do (and not do), and how to get the best possible healed result. If you’re preparing for your first appointment or currently in the middle of healing, this is the reassurance you need.

Quick Overview — The Full Healing Timeline

Before we go day by day, here’s the shape of the whole healing journey.

Days 1–3: The Sharp Stage — Eyeliner looks bold, dark, and slightly swollen. Sharpness is at its peak.

Days 3–5: The Peeling Stage — Small flakes and light peeling start. This is when it looks its worst. Do not pick.

Days 5–10: The “Where Did It Go” Stage — Colour appears to fade dramatically. Almost every client panics. It always comes back.

Days 10–21: The Bloom Stage — Pigment resurfaces from beneath. Colour deepens gradually each day.

Weeks 4–6: The Settle Stage — Final colour, softness, and definition emerge. This is what you’ll live with until your perfecting session.

Weeks 6–8: The Perfecting Session — Small refinements, colour adjustments, and any patchy healing corrected. Result is finalised.

If you understand that pattern, you’ll skip the panic that most first-time PMU clients experience — and you’ll follow aftercare more carefully because you know what each stage is trying to achieve.

Day-by-Day — What Actually Happens

Here’s what you can genuinely expect each day of the healing process.

Day 0 (Day of Appointment)

What you’ll see: Sharp, defined, dark eyeliner exactly as designed. Slight redness around the tattoo area. Possibly mild swelling by evening.

What you’ll feel: Warmth, mild tenderness, occasional stinging. Not painful — most clients describe it as “aware of the area” rather than sore.

What to do:

  • Apply the healing balm provided in your aftercare kit — a very thin layer, every 3–4 hours
  • Blot (not wipe) the area with a clean tissue if any lymph fluid or moisture appears
  • Skip eye makeup entirely
  • Sleep on your back with an extra pillow to reduce morning swelling
  • Take an antihistamine if your artist recommended one — reduces overnight swelling significantly

What to avoid: Water on the tattoo area, kitchen steam, hot showers, exercise, alcohol, salty or spicy food.

Day 1

What you’ll see: Colour still bold, may look slightly deeper or darker than Day 0 (this is normal). Mild swelling that peaks in the morning and improves by evening.

What you’ll feel: Slightly tighter, possibly more “aware” than yesterday. Still not painful.

What to do:

  • Continue the thin balm application every 3–4 hours
  • Blot gently if needed
  • Cool eye compress (over a barrier — never directly on tattoo) can reduce swelling
  • Stay hydrated
  • Continue sleeping on your back

What to avoid: All of yesterday’s list, plus no rubbing, touching, or unnecessary contact with the area.

Day 2

What you’ll see: Any morning swelling should be noticeably less than Day 1. Colour still looks slightly bolder than final. Area may feel very slightly tight.

What you’ll feel: Almost normal. Most clients say Day 2 is “the day it starts to feel manageable.”

What to do:

  • Continue balm applications
  • Very gentle cleansing of the surrounding face is fine — just avoid the direct tattoo area
  • Can start light activity (short walks, work desk)

What to avoid: Still no gym, no swimming, no makeup on eyes.

Day 3

What you’ll see: Colour may start to look slightly darker or crustier as the surface begins to heal. Very fine flaking may start.

What you’ll feel: May feel slightly itchy — this is the healing skin regenerating. Do not scratch or rub.

What to do:

  • Continue balm — this is when it matters most for smooth healing
  • If itchy, gently pat around the area (never on it)
  • Keep sleeping position elevated if you’re prone to morning swelling

What to avoid: Absolutely no picking, no peeling, no scratching. Whatever flakes off naturally is fine; whatever you help off is what causes patchy healing.

Day 4

What you’ll see: Flaking is now happening. Small dark flakes may come away on your pillow or when you blot. This is normal — it’s just the top layer of pigment shedding.

What you’ll feel: Mildly itchy or tight, possibly slightly uncomfortable.

What to do:

  • Continue balm to keep the healing surface moist
  • Blot away any loose flakes gently — never rub or peel
  • Continue sleeping considerately

What to avoid: Do not “help” any flakes off. Every flake you pick removes healing pigment underneath and creates a patchy healed result.

Day 5

What you’ll see: Most of the flaking may have finished by now, or is finishing over the next 2 days. The eyeliner may look lighter, patchier, or unevenly coloured.

What you’ll feel: Nearly normal. Any tightness or itching should be resolving.

What to do:

  • Reduce balm to 2–3 times per day
  • You can gently cleanse the surrounding area more normally now
  • Continue gentle habits

What to avoid: No mascara, no eye makeup, no eye rubbing, no swim/sauna/steam.

Days 6–9: The “Where Did It Go” Stage

What you’ll see: Colour may look dramatically lighter than the freshly-tattooed result. In some spots it may look like it’s disappeared entirely. Many clients panic at this stage.

What you’ll feel: Physical symptoms fully resolved. Any anxiety is emotional, not physical.

What’s actually happening: The top layer of pigment shed with the flaking. The deeper pigment hasn’t yet resurfaced. This is completely normal and reversible — the colour always returns.

What to do:

  • Continue very light balm use if the area still feels dry (optional now)
  • Trust the process — this is the stage every PMU client panics through
  • Take photos daily so you can see the colour returning next week

What to avoid: Booking an unnecessary “fix” appointment. Contacting five different salons for second opinions. Assuming the treatment failed. It always comes back.

Days 10–14: The Bloom Stage

What you’ll see: Colour begins re-emerging from underneath the healed skin. Each day slightly darker, more defined, and more even than the day before. By Day 14, you should be seeing about 60–70% of the final result.

What you’ll feel: Completely normal.

What to do:

  • Resume normal skincare — but keep retinol, vitamin C, and strong acids away from the immediate eye area
  • Can gently apply eye makeup (mascara, subtle eyeliner if you want) with clean products and gentle removal
  • Wear high-SPF sunscreen daily on the face

What to avoid: Direct sun on the eye area for extended periods, oil-based eye makeup removers, aggressive rubbing during cleansing.

Weeks 3–4

What you’ll see: Colour deepens further. Shape looks more defined and integrated. The tattoo starts looking “like yours.”

What you’ll feel: Fully normal.

What to do:

  • Continue daily SPF around the eye area
  • Full normal skincare fine
  • Full normal makeup fine

What to avoid: Nothing specific — you’re back to normal, minus a couple of long-term rules (see the “Long-Term Care” section below).

Weeks 4–6: The Settle Stage

What you’ll see: Final colour, softness, and definition. This is your true healed result. You’ll now know what small adjustments (if any) you want at the perfecting session.

What you’ll feel: Completely normal.

What to do:

  • Book your perfecting session at 6–8 weeks if you haven’t already
  • Make a mental note of anything you’d like adjusted — colour intensity, thickness, length, or shape

Weeks 6–8: The Perfecting Session

What happens: Your artist reviews the healed result, makes any small colour or coverage adjustments, evens out any patchy healing, and finalises the shape. This session is essential — no eyeliner tattoo is considered “complete” until after it.

Healing after the perfecting session: Follows the same timeline as the initial session but usually milder — less peeling, faster settling, less dramatic “where did it go” stage.

The 8 Rules That Make or Break Your Healing

If you forget everything else, remember these eight rules. They are the difference between an outstanding healed result and a patchy one.

1. Do not pick, peel, or scratch. Ever.

The single most important rule. Every flake you help off is pigment you’re pulling out of the healing skin.

2. Blot, never wipe.

Use a clean tissue and press gently. Rubbing displaces pigment during the crucial first week.

3. Keep the area dry for 7 days.

No water on the tattoo. That means no swimming, no baths (showers with head tilted back are fine), no direct water pressure, no long steamy showers.

4. No eye makeup for 10–14 days minimum.

Even “gentle” eye makeup risks infection or displacement of pigment during the healing window.

5. Sleep on your back for the first 4–5 nights.

Prevents accidental rubbing on the pillow and reduces morning swelling.

6. No sweat, sauna, steam room, or intense exercise for the first 10 days.

Sweat introduces bacteria to the healing tattoo. Steam softens the healing crust prematurely.

7. Apply balm sparingly, not thickly.

A thin, breathable layer heals better than a heavy occlusive one. Over-balming causes murky pigment and delayed healing.

8. Daily SPF around the eye area forever.

Sun exposure is the #1 cause of PMU fading long-term. A gentle mineral SPF around the eyes is a habit for life after eyeliner tattoo.

What’s Normal vs What’s Not

Because eyeliner tattoo is a sensitive-area treatment, here’s the honest normal-vs-not-normal reference.

Completely normal during healing:

  • Mild swelling for 2–3 days
  • Sharp/dark colour appearance first 5 days
  • Flaking days 3–7
  • Colour appearing to “disappear” days 6–10
  • Very mild itching around the area
  • Slight tightness or awareness of the area for 5–7 days
  • Uneven-looking colour after peeling (evens out during bloom)
  • Panic feelings during days 6–10

Not normal — contact your artist immediately:

  • Severe swelling that gets worse rather than better after Day 3
  • Pus, thick yellow discharge, or foul smell
  • Fever alongside eye symptoms
  • Vision changes or eye pain
  • Rash spreading beyond the immediate tattoo area
  • Severe burning or sharp pain persisting beyond Day 2

Serious complications from properly done eyeliner tattoo are rare. But because the eye is involved, any concerning symptom is worth an immediate check-in rather than “seeing how it goes.”

Long-Term Care — Making Your Eyeliner Tattoo Last 3–5 Years

Once healed, a few small ongoing habits massively extend the lifespan of your eyeliner tattoo.

Daily habits:

  • SPF around the eye area every day, sun or cloud
  • Gentle eye makeup remover (avoid oil-based removers, they can slightly speed pigment fading)
  • Cleanse gently — no scrubbing motion around the eyes
  • Use a gentle mineral-based eye cream if you use one

Weekly habits:

  • Avoid direct exfoliation over the eyeliner area (glycolic acid, retinol, aggressive scrubs)
  • Keep chlorine and salt water exposure moderated with goggles when swimming often

Every 12–18 months:

  • Book a colour refresh appointment. This is significantly cheaper than a full new eyeliner tattoo — and getting the refresh in the right window means the colour never fully fades.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does eyeliner tattoo take to heal?

The surface heals in 7–10 days. Full colour settles and matures by 4–6 weeks. The perfecting session at 6–8 weeks finalises the result.

How long does eyeliner tattoo last overall?

3 to 5 years on average, depending on skin type, sun exposure, and lifestyle. Most clients book a colour refresh every 18–24 months to keep the result fresh.

Can I wear contact lenses after eyeliner tattoo?

Not for the first 24–48 hours. After that, gentle re-insertion is fine, but be extra careful around the healing area for the first 10 days.

Can I cry, laugh, or blink normally after eyeliner tattoo?

Yes — blinking is fine and doesn’t damage the healing tattoo. Crying and laughter are fine but try to blot tears gently rather than wiping.

Why does it look so much darker in the first few days?

Fresh PMU is always darker and bolder than the healed result. Colour softens 30–40% during healing. This is the most consistent panic-point at Day 1–2.

When does the colour “come back” after the fade-out stage?

Between days 10–14 for most clients. By day 21, you should be seeing about 70% of your final result. By week 4–6, the result is fully settled.

Can I sleep on my side after eyeliner tattoo?

Not ideally for the first 4–5 nights. Face-down sleeping is definitely to be avoided during the healing week. Sleeping on your back with an extra pillow reduces swelling and prevents accidental rubbing.

Can I use eye drops during healing?

Yes — gentle preservative-free eye drops (lubricating drops, not medicated) are fine and can help if your eyes feel dry during healing.

When can I wear mascara again?

10–14 days minimum. Use a fresh, clean tube — bacteria from old mascara around a healing tattoo is genuinely risky.

Can I get eyeliner tattoo during pregnancy?

We don’t perform eyeliner tattoo during pregnancy or the first 6 weeks of breastfeeding.

Can I get eyeliner tattoo if I have very sensitive eyes?

Usually yes — but disclose fully at consultation. Patch testing is available for anyone concerned about sensitivity.

Do I have to have the perfecting session?

Yes — for a complete, professional eyeliner tattoo result. The perfecting session refines colour, evens out patchy healing, and finalises the shape. It’s included in your original quoted price at Posh Deluxe.

What if I don’t love the result after healing?

Small adjustments (colour intensity, shape refinement, thickness) are exactly what the perfecting session is for. Bring your feedback openly — this session is genuinely designed for refinement.

Do you offer a free consultation before booking?

Yes — every new eyeliner tattoo client at Posh Deluxe is welcome to a free in-salon consultation with our PMU team.
