Cosmetic Tattoo Touch-Ups and Refresh Sessions: When, Why, and What to Expect

You got your ombre brows. You went through the bold-day-three panic, the day-eight ghost phase, and the slow-but-beautiful emergence of your true colour over weeks 3 and 4. You loved your perfecting session at 6 to 8 weeks. And for a glorious 12 to 24 months, you barely thought about your brows again — they just looked beautiful, every morning.

And then, one day, you notice them softening. The colour that was rich and defined is now just gently there. Still nice, still better than nothing — but not quite the wake-up-and-go magic they were a year ago.

That’s the moment to come back. That’s what touch-ups, colour boosts, and refresh sessions are for.

The PMU world has more than one type of follow-up appointment, and the differences genuinely matter — for your result, your timing, and your budget. At Posh Deluxe Salon in Mount Pleasant, our cosmetic tattoo clients ask about touch-ups constantly, so this guide breaks down everything you need to know.

We’ll cover the three different types of follow-up appointments, when each is the right choice, what they cost, what to expect during the appointment, and how to make your refresh last as long as possible. Whether you’re approaching your first perfecting session or wondering if it’s time for a colour boost on PMU you had two years ago, this is your complete guide.

First, the Three Types of PMU Follow-Up Appointment

Most clients lump every PMU follow-up together as “a touch-up.” But there are actually three distinct appointment types — and knowing which one you need affects everything from timing to price.

1. The Perfecting Session (6–8 weeks after your initial treatment)

This is the first follow-up after your original PMU appointment. It’s the most important one — and at Posh Deluxe, it’s always included in your treatment price. Other studios sometimes charge separately for this. We don’t, because it’s an essential part of getting your PMU to its final beautiful result.

The perfecting session is where we:

  • Even out any patchy spots from healing
  • Deepen colour where pigment didn’t retain as expected
  • Refine the shape if needed
  • Top up any areas that lifted away during the healing process

It’s a shorter appointment than your initial treatment (usually 60-90 minutes versus 2-3 hours) and heals faster. Without this session, your PMU won’t reach its full potential.

For more on the full PMU healing journey leading up to your perfecting session, see What to Expect After Ombre Brows.

2. The Colour Boost (12–24 months later)

A colour boost is your “annual refresh” appointment. PMU naturally fades over time as your skin regenerates. A colour boost adds fresh pigment to keep your tattoo looking vibrant.

Colour boosts are:

  • Significantly shorter than your original treatment (usually 60-90 minutes)
  • Significantly cheaper — usually 40-50% of the price of a fresh treatment
  • Less intensive healing — the healing window is shorter and gentler

You’ll come in for a colour boost every 12 to 24 months for as long as you want to keep your PMU looking fresh. Some clients book yearly (more vibrant). Others stretch to every 2 years (more lived-in).

3. The Full Refresh (3+ years later, or for very faded PMU)

A full refresh is essentially a brand new treatment over heavily faded existing PMU. It’s needed when:

  • It’s been 3+ years since your last appointment
  • Your original PMU has faded by more than 70%
  • You want to change the shape, colour, or style significantly
  • You had work done elsewhere that needs reworking

A full refresh takes the same time as your original treatment, includes a fresh perfecting session, and costs roughly the same as new PMU.

When Should You Book Your Touch-Up?

This is the question we get asked most. Here’s how to know it’s time.

For your perfecting session

Easy — book it at 6 to 8 weeks after your initial PMU appointment. We’ll usually schedule this at the end of your first appointment so it’s already locked in. If anything happens (illness, travel), we can always reschedule.

Critical rule: Don’t push the perfecting session beyond 12 weeks. Too long a gap and your PMU starts settling without the topping-up it needs.

For your colour boost

This is more subjective and depends on how you like your PMU to look. Here’s our honest guide:

Book your colour boost when:

  • You start consciously thinking “my brows look softer than they used to”
  • You catch yourself reaching for a brow pencil more than before
  • Photos start showing your PMU as less defined than in older photos
  • You notice the back/tail of the brow has faded more than the front

Don’t wait until:

  • Your PMU has almost completely disappeared
  • You can barely see the colour in good light
  • It’s been more than 24 months since your last appointment

The earlier you book a colour boost (within reason), the easier and more effective it is. Waiting until your PMU is almost gone means we’re working with less existing pigment, which sometimes requires a more intensive (and more expensive) treatment.

For a full refresh

Book a full refresh consultation when:

  • It’s been more than 3 years since your last PMU appointment
  • Your PMU has faded by more than 70%
  • You want to change the shape or style
  • You’ve had work done elsewhere that you’d like to correct

We always start with a free consultation for full refresh clients — we’ll assess what’s still in your skin and recommend the right approach (sometimes a colour boost works even at 3+ years if enough pigment remains; sometimes a full refresh is genuinely needed).

How Long Will My Touch-Up Take?

Each appointment type has a different rhythm.

Perfecting session: 60–90 minutes

  • 15 minutes: Quick consultation, assessing how your PMU has healed
  • 15 minutes: Numbing cream application + waiting period
  • 30–45 minutes: Actual pigment work to refine and even out
  • 10 minutes: Final cleanup, aftercare instructions, photos

Colour boost: 60–90 minutes

  • 10 minutes: Welcome back, quick chat about how your PMU has performed since your last visit
  • 15 minutes: Numbing cream + waiting period
  • 30–45 minutes: Pigment work to refresh and rebuild colour
  • 10 minutes: Aftercare reminders, booking your next refresh

Full refresh: 2–3 hours

  • 30 minutes: Detailed consultation + shape mapping (we treat this like a new appointment)
  • 15–20 minutes: Numbing cream
  • 90–120 minutes: Full pigment work
  • 15 minutes: Aftercare kit, perfecting session booking, photos

Will My Touch-Up Hurt?

Most clients report touch-up appointments are noticeably easier than the original treatment.

A few reasons why:

  • Your skin already has pigment in it, so we’re not creating from scratch
  • The numbing cream feels more effective on already-treated skin
  • You know what to expect, which reduces anxiety
  • The actual pigment work covers less area, with shorter total exposure

That said, everyone’s sensitivity is different. If you found your original PMU appointment uncomfortable, you can take paracetamol (not ibuprofen — it thins the blood) one hour before your touch-up appointment to help.

How Will My Touch-Up Heal?

The healing window for touch-ups is shorter and gentler than your original treatment.

Perfecting session healing:

  • Days 1-3: Bold colour return, slight tenderness
  • Days 4-7: Light flaking (much less than original treatment)
  • Week 2: Brief “ghost phase” — but only mild
  • Weeks 3-4: True final colour emerges
  • Total healing time: about 3 weeks

Colour boost healing:

  • Days 1-2: Bold colour, slight tenderness
  • Days 3-5: Minor flaking
  • Week 1-2: Quick ghost phase
  • Weeks 2-3: Final colour settled
  • Total healing time: about 2-3 weeks

Full refresh healing:

Same as your original PMU treatment — 4 to 6 weeks for full colour settle. See our Ombre Brows Healing Timeline for the day-by-day journey.

Touch-Up Aftercare: The Quick Version

Aftercare for touch-ups is identical to your original PMU aftercare, just for a shorter window.

For the first 7 days:

  • Apply your aftercare balm 4-6 times daily in thin layers
  • Keep the area dry — pat away any lymph or sweat
  • No makeup on the treated area
  • No swimming, saunas, or hot showers
  • Sleep on your back if possible

For days 7-14:

  • Continue with a gentle moisturiser
  • Resume normal exercise
  • No exfoliation or strong actives on the treated area

For weeks 2-6:

  • Daily SPF on the treated area
  • Avoid retinols and acids near the area
  • Brief moments of swimming and sun exposure are now fine

For complete pre- and post-care details, see our Cosmetic Tattoo Pre-Care Guide.

How to Make Your Touch-Up Last Longer

Want to stretch the time between colour boosts? Here are the genuinely effective habits.

1. Daily SPF on the treated area

The single biggest factor in PMU longevity. UV exposure breaks down pigment over time. A daily SPF (or a moisturiser with SPF) on your brows, lips, or eyeliner zone extends the life of your PMU by 6 to 12 months.

2. Skip retinols and acids on the treated area

Strong actives accelerate skin cell turnover, which means your PMU fades faster. You can still use retinols and acids on the rest of your face — just keep them off the brow, lip, or eyeliner zone.

3. Avoid chemical exfoliation near the area

Glycolic peels, salicylic acid masks, and aggressive scrubs all speed up fading. Keep them away from your PMU zones.

4. Use gentle, fragrance-free skincare

Sensitive-skin formulations are gentler on pigment.

5. Limit pool and saltwater exposure

Chlorine and salt both degrade pigment over time. Heavy daily swimmers will see PMU fade faster than landlubbers.

6. Don’t pick at flaking skin

This applies during initial healing — pulling at flakes removes pigment with the skin.

7. Book your colour boost on time

Don’t wait until your PMU is almost gone. Boosting at 12-18 months keeps your colour consistently beautiful and prevents the more intensive refresh appointments.

What Affects How Often You’ll Need Touch-Ups

Everyone’s PMU longevity is different. Here’s what influences yours:

Skin type:

  • Oily skin: PMU fades faster; expect colour boosts every 12-15 months
  • Normal skin: Average longevity; colour boosts every 18-24 months
  • Dry skin: Best longevity; colour boosts every 24 months

Sun exposure:

Outdoor lifestyles, frequent beach trips, and minimal SPF use mean more frequent touch-ups.

Skincare routine:

Heavy use of retinols, vitamin C, or AHAs near the PMU zone accelerates fading.

Pigment colour:

Lighter and warmer pigments fade faster than darker, cooler ones. (We always choose your pigment with longevity in mind.)

Original treatment type:

  • Microblading alone: Shortest longevity (12-18 months)
  • Combination brows: Medium longevity (18-30 months)
  • Ombre brows: Longest longevity (1-3 years)
  • Lip blush: Medium longevity (12-24 months)
  • Eyeliner tattoo: Longest longevity of all (2-5 years)

For more on the original differences, see Microblading vs Ombre Brows and Combination Brows.

Hormonal changes:

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, and hormonal medications can affect how pigment behaves in your skin. Always tell your PMU artist about hormonal changes before your touch-up.

Touch-Ups for Each PMU Treatment Type

Different PMU treatments age differently. Here’s what to expect for each.

Ombre brows touch-ups

  • Perfecting session: 6-8 weeks after original
  • First colour boost: typically 18-24 months
  • Ongoing maintenance: colour boost every 18-24 months
  • Common ageing pattern: front of brow stays vibrant longer; tail fades first

Microblading touch-ups

  • Perfecting session: 6-8 weeks after original
  • First colour boost: typically 12-18 months
  • Ongoing maintenance: colour boost every 12-18 months
  • Common ageing pattern: hair strokes soften over time, eventually blurring into a more “powder” look

Combination brows touch-ups

  • Perfecting session: 6-8 weeks after original
  • First colour boost: typically 18-30 months
  • Ongoing maintenance: colour boost every 18-30 months
  • Common ageing pattern: ombre body stays longer; hair strokes at front soften first

Lip blush touch-ups

  • Perfecting session: 6-8 weeks after original
  • First colour boost: typically 12-24 months
  • Ongoing maintenance: colour boost every 12-24 months
  • Common ageing pattern: colour fades fairly evenly across lips; outer border often softens first

For more on the lip blush healing journey leading to that perfecting session, see our Day-by-Day Lip Blush Healing Guide.

Eyeliner tattoo touch-ups

  • Perfecting session: 6-8 weeks after original
  • First colour boost: typically 24-36 months
  • Ongoing maintenance: colour boost every 24-36 months
  • Common ageing pattern: eyeliner often holds well for years; thinning at the outer corner is most common

For more on eyeliner tattoo aftercare, see The Complete Eyeliner Tattoo Care Instructions.

What If My PMU Doesn’t Need a Touch-Up?

Sometimes clients come in for a colour boost consultation and we honestly tell them: “You don’t need this yet.”

If your PMU is still holding well and you simply want a check-in, we’ll:

  • Look closely at colour retention
  • Take photos to compare with previous sessions
  • Recommend a target date for your next colour boost (sometimes 6 more months, sometimes a year)
  • Send you home without a treatment

We’d rather you save the appointment for when it’s actually needed than do work that isn’t useful yet. Trust is the long game.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when it’s time for a touch-up?

Watch for these signs: you’re reaching for a brow pencil more often, the colour has noticeably softened compared to fresh photos from your original treatment, the back/tail of the brow has faded more than the front, or it’s been more than 18 months since your last appointment. Any one of these is a good reason to book a consultation.

How much does a cosmetic tattoo touch-up cost?

In Perth:
Perfecting session: Included in your original treatment price at Posh Deluxe (other studios may charge $150-250 extra)
Colour boost (12-24 months later): $300-500 depending on treatment type
Full refresh (3+ years later): $550-1,100 — essentially the same as new PMU
We always quote transparently at consultation.

Can I get a colour boost on PMU done at a different studio?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no — depends entirely on what’s still in your skin and the quality of the original work. Book a free consultation and we’ll honestly assess whether we can colour-boost your existing PMU or whether a full refresh would give you a better result.

Will a colour boost change the shape or colour of my PMU?

Not significantly. A colour boost refreshes what’s already there. If you want a different shape or colour, you’re looking at either a full refresh or laser PMU removal first. We’ll always discuss this at consultation.

Do I need to do anything special before my touch-up appointment?

The same pre-care rules apply as for your original PMU appointment — no blood thinners, no retinols on the treated area for a week, no fresh tans, no facials in the 7 days before. See our Cosmetic Tattoo Pre-Care Guide for the full checklist.

Can I skip the perfecting session?

We strongly recommend against it. The perfecting session is what brings your PMU to its final beautiful result. Skipping it usually means uneven colour, patchy areas, or shape inconsistencies that bother you for the next year. It’s included in your price for a reason — please come back for it.

What happens if I miss my colour boost window?

If you’re past the ideal 12-24 month window, your PMU will continue to fade. At some point (usually 2.5-3 years out from your original treatment), you’ll need a full refresh rather than a colour boost. The longer you wait, the more intensive the refresh.

Will my touch-up heal exactly like my original?

Similar but easier. Touch-ups typically heal faster, with less intense bold-colour phases and shorter ghost-phase periods. Most clients are pleasantly surprised by how much easier the touch-up healing is.

Can I get a touch-up while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. The same rules apply to touch-ups as to original PMU treatments — no PMU during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. We’ll happily reschedule your touch-up for when you’re cleared.

Do you offer touch-ups for PMU done elsewhere?

Yes — with a consultation first. We need to see what’s in your skin to recommend the right approach. Many of our touch-up clients are women who had their original PMU done in another city or country and are now permanent Perth residents.

A Final Word: Touch-Ups Are Part of the Journey
